What the heck is Kitchari?

Kitchari is an Indian superfood that combines rice, mung beans, spices and ghee (or other high quality oil if you're vegan), to create a complete meal that is both nourishing and cleansing.

It is one of the simplest to digest foods, and has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic cleansing. 

I often refer to it affectionately as the "Indian Chicken Noodle Soup" - in the West where we may turn to chicken noodle soup to support our immune system when we're feeling sick, in India, it is Kitchari.

Why is a Kitchari Cleanse Different?

That's a great question, and the answer is pretty simple. More "modern" cleanses like juice cleanses, can be really depleting for the body and mind.

Many of these cleanses methods are intense, are done with the intention to "lose weight" and can increase Vata Dosha.

This is really problematic, especially if we struggle with anxiety, overwhelm, and stress; it can potentially make these things worse.

A Kitchari cleanse does the job of cleansing the body, while providing deep nourishment, and a grounding energy that is important for supporting Vata Dosha.

Who is the Kitchari Cleanse NOT for?

There are some people for whom the Kitchari cleanse would likely NOT be a good fit. 

  • People looking for a restrictive cleanse to lose weight. You might lose weight on this cleanse, but that is NOT the intention of this program.
  • Those just looking for a physical cleanse. Those who aren't interested in combining physical detoxification with the cleansing of the mind would not enjoy this program. 
  • Women who are pregnant and in the early stages of breastfeeding. While Kitchari is super nourishing, a full "cleanse" during this time in a woman's life would not be advised.
